December’s Hidden Gems

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009
We saw Karl Ehmer’s Alpine Steak House featured on Food Channel Chef Guy Fieri’s show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and decided to give it a try. Guy claims the Steakhouse, on the west side of S. Tamiami Trail about a half-mile south of Bee Ridge, has the best Oyster Rockefeller he’s ever had. The secret, according to Guy, passed down from Karl to his son to his grandson, is in the addition of a little Pernod. We’re not sure what the secret is, but a half dozen with a dark German beer on tap makes for one terrific lunch.
The Steakhouse also makes its own sausages and Turducken – a chicken stuffed inside a duck stuffed inside a turkey. Sounds crazy, tastes great! Stop in and sample something or check them out at www.karlehmer.com. It’s another of those hidden gems that makes Sarasota a piece of paradise.

The Buzz on the New Pool

Join all our Facebook fans and those on Twitter who’ve been letting us know what they think about the new remodel and tell us about what your plans are when you get here. Here’s what they’re saying about the new pool… Dot Cummins-Schmitendorf catches the spirit of things when she posted this comment. “Imagine… sitting on the lanai, tapping away on the laptop… and it’s November at Sun-N-Fun RV Resort… the pool is crystal clear… the weather is gorgeous…boy, am I happy to be here!” Karolyn Mcnamara tells us “5 more days and we will be floating on our noodles!! Thanks Sun n’ Fun. Home sweet home!!” By the time you read this, we’re sure Karolyn will already be noodling around and soaking up the sun. Jane Danielson tells us, “It is the very best pool I have every been in!” No argument here. Betty Sadlon says she can’t wait, “This November weather around here I hate, can’t wait to feel the warm sun at Sun-N-Fun.” You won’t be disappointed. But we don’t think anybody summed up the whole pool project for all of us than Dee Dammann did on Facebook the day the pool reopened. “WooHoo!!!!!!!”

Pool Reopens with New Improvements

Calling All Noodlers, Lap Swimmers, Layabouts and Waterbabies

Our pool has always been the crown jewel of Sun-N-Fun, the place where everyone gathers, and where so many memorable activities from karaoke to chocolate bingo to dive-in movies all happen.

This past year, after adding the water slide, we decided to give the pool a complete facelift. It’s been quite an undertaking but – judging from everyone’s reaction – a totally successful one. Now, after lots of hard work and patience, the pool is open again, more beautiful and better than ever… just waiting for you to dive in and be delighted.

Just how big a job was it? We’ll let the numbers speak for themselves:

  • The job took 8 weeks to complete. We closed the pool right after Labor Day and held our grand reopening November 6th.
  • The pool holds 210,000 gallons of water. It took almost 24-hours to refill it using one 3-inch round fire-hose and 3 regular garden hoses.
  • The water surface area is 6000 square feet.  How much is that? On a single day, we lose in excess of 1,400 gallons of pool water due to just evaporation.
  • We used 7,560 square feet of Quartzite to refinish the interior. And every square foot was hand troweled.
  • 2,600 blue tiles were used. They help make the water even more sparkling.
  • 520 square feet of travertine marble was used to refinish the coping around the pool.
  • To make it easier and safer getting in and out, the steps leading into the pool were widened from 6-feet to 18.
  • There are six 75-foot long lanes for lap swimmers.
  • We increased the pool deck by 2100 square feet and now have 650 chairs and loungers and new umbrellas. More room, more Sun-N-Fun.

The cost of the entire project was a whopping $350,000. And that doesn’t include the chocolate for chocolate bingo.

Leave your comments about the pool renovations below. We want to hear from you!
