Summer Camp Opens at Sun-N-Fun

“Dirty, tired and happy!” is how Sun-N-Fun’s new Camp Coordinator Marci Melzer describes her goal for the kids lucky enough to be attending our new summer day camp.
It’s a goal that’s certainly been achieved during the camp’s first weeks and Marci has some great ideas to keep the fun going all summer long. She’s coordinating activities for the kids that are tied to our special theme weekends. So, for example, to prepare the young ones for our Great American Backyard Campout Weekend in June, the kids spent the week learning survival skills, how to cook outdoors and how to find their way around using maps and compasses. No Global Positioning Systems here.
Every week promises to be different – a necessity for keeping the kids interested, involved and having a great time. For example, Marci plans a Holiday Week where the young ones celebrate a different holiday every day. It kicks off with Thanksgiving Monday, with the kids doing Thanksgiving Day crafts like pumpkin carving and playing games like Pilgrims and Indians. Tuesday will be Un-birthday Day where everyone’s birthday will be celebrated. Wednesday is a chance to experience different Independence Day traditions from around the world, like Cinco de Mayo in Mexico and Bastille Day in France. Thursday it will be Christmas, complete with decorations, cookies and a tree trimming. And it all comes to a roaring conclusion on Friday with what Marci describes as a totally freaked out Halloween.
Talk to her for just a few minutes and Marci’s enthusiasm for what’s she’s doing becomes contagious as she describes her plans to make every day a special one.
“Of course, in addition to all the activities, the kids will have ‘swim and slide’ time everyday at the pool. We’ll be doing a lot of big, messy art projects like making paper mache, doing art with vegetables, and creating plaster of paris sculptures. And there’ll be opportunities for the kids to try the water walking ball, disc golf and lots of the other amenities here at the Resort. It’s utilizing all the resources – and there are so many of them that make Sun-N-Fun such a special place – that promise to make this an experience the kids will never forget.
“We’ve got families coming to stay here so the kids can go to camp. They can enjoy their time at the pool, restaurant and take part in the lifestyle activities that Sun-N-Fun offers adults – and that make the Resort a kind of big kids camp – while knowing their children are going to be ably looked after. We’ll even be taking care of lunch and snack breaks. So everyone has a terrific time.”
A summer camp is something General Manager Tim Deputy has wanted to do for quite a while. Now he’s found the perfect person to lead the effort in Marci. A speech pathologist with the Manatee School District, Marci has a lifetime of camping experience, starting as a Girl Scout camper and graduating to a senior counselor and waterfront director when she was in college and graduate school.
She’ll be ably assisted by Sun-N-Fun team members like lifeguard Robert Winkle, an Eagle Scout with lots of camping experience, and her daughters Megan, a junior at Braden River High, and Ella, who works as a volunteer in the Lifestyles Department.
“I couldn’t be more excited about going back to camp. And I’m determined to give the kids the same great experience I had growing up. And that means getting dirty, tired and happy – while maybe even learning a little something while they do.”
Don’t delay. Call today and make this the summer your kids will always remember. Sign the kids up for a week or for the entire summer.
